The Birth of Rugby League

The Birth of Rugby League

Teams learn about the social issues that led to the formation of the Northern Rugby Football Union (NRFU) and its break away from Rugby Football Union (RFU) in 1895 - the birth of rugby league. Activities include reading play scripts of meetings of the RFU in 1893 and the founding meeting of the NRFU in 1895, conducting their own democratic vote, assessing the strength of arguments for and against paying working class men for 'broken time' - wages lost by leaving work early to play - and as professionals, and studying and answering questions about contemporary satirical cartoons.
